HOW WE HELP

Students in Determined to Succeed have academic records ranging from average to strong. They have been selected by their teachers for their self-motivation and determination to succeed. Our students come from different ethnic backgrounds with different obstacles in their path, but share the common goal of striving to get the most out of their education. They benefit from having the same credentialed teacher follow them continuously from the time that they leave elementary school until the time that they enter college. Determined to Succeed gives deserving students access to academic and social support that would otherwise be beyond their reach. We ensure that our students are given the means to perform at their highest academic potential. We are now in the third successful year of our program, and our students are in the 8th grade. This year Determined to Succeed will provide this group of students with various opportunities to attend some of LA’s top high schools. Currently, plans are underway for Determined to Succeed to begin work with two additional groups of teacher-selected 5th graders. These students will be chosen from two different school sites, and they will be transitioned into middle school in the fall of 2008.

"A child's perception is everything. When a child believes that their teacher cares about them as a person, and cares about whether they are doing well, the child begins to believe that they can learn too, and they do. I am inspired by the work of Determined to Succeed."

- Mary Beth Barry, Admissions Director, Brentwood Lower School

--------------------------------------------

"Determined to Succeed has served to inspire, motivate and focus these students beyond what anyone thought possible, including the students themselves."

- Abby Adams, board member
